Last night at 3 AM, the Senate passed a budget deal that was not just a horrible piece of legislation undeserving of the support of a self-respecting Congress. It also represented the last gasping breath of a disgraced bipartisan beltway establishment on the verge of collapse.
The bill was the product of an unfair, dysfunctional, and undemocratic process – a process that is virtually indistinguishable from what we promised the American people a G.O.P.-controlled Congress would bring to an end.
The bill suspended the debt limit for 17 months and increased government spending beyond its already unsustainable levels. And it did so while also failing to make any reforms that would put us on a path toward fiscal sustainability.
According to the Social Security Trustees, the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program is scheduled to run out of money in 2016. Which means that, without serious reform, disability benefits will be slashed, across the board, by nearly 20 percent. Only in Washington, D.C. could something so deceptive and ineffectual – something so unfair to America’s seniors and future generations – be considered a “reform.”
Under the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, the bankruptcy deadline of SSDI has been pushed off for an additional 6 years, until 2022. But here’s the kicker: it does so by raiding the Social Security Trust Fund, to the tune of $150 billion.
RINOTRACKER RESPONSE FROM CHRIS ADAMO:
As the presidential campaign season heats up, Americans are hearing much about Washington being “broken,” and the need for a major overhaul to fix it. Unfortunately, those “Ruling Class” political hacks shouting the loudest mean something entirely different from what most Americans might assume. They don’t see the root problem as an out-of-control federal leviathan needing reined in. Instead, it is the continual annoyance and increasing interference of that rabble on Main Street that thinks it should have a say in the public trough “Free for all” the political “elites” have enjoyed, largely unchecked, for many years. Rather than confronting the fraud and corruption overtaking D.C and threatening to bankrupt the nation, they advocate more of the liberal disease as the supposed cure for its symptoms.
In that poisoned climate, principled statesmen are few, but along with Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Senator Mike Lee of Utah is unafraid to speak undiluted truth to the self-serving power of the political “Establishment.” And his commentary, which should be read and absorbed in its entirety, gives ample evidence of his principle and how greatly it differs from the thoroughly tainted environment of Washington.
Consider the stark contrast between Senator Lee’s grim admonition and the rosy façade painted onto this budget fiasco by former House Speaker John Boehner and his new surrogate, Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. As this abomination of a “budget deal” worked its way through the House, Boehner touted his involvement as giving Ryan a “clean slate.” For his part, Ryan initially panned the effort, but then completely sold out to it, including the “clean slate” diatribe.
Only among self-serving career politicians could collusion with the Obama White House and its dangerous governmental overreaches be billed as a “clean slate,” when in reality it is total surrender by the GOP. In the process, every single aspect of this out of control federal government, which the Republican “leadership” had promised to fix during last year’s campaign, has instead been further expanded and entrenched.
While the Social Security “Disability” and retirement numbers may seem a bit convoluted at first, the bottom line is that Obama, aided and abetted by his “bipartisan” lackeys in the Congress, has raided the retirement funds into which seniors have been forced to pay. The goal of this institutionalized theft is to ensure continued funding of a broken “disability” scam that is totally corrupted by fraud and excess.
The Social Security “trust fund” for seniors is again being pillaged just as Obama gutted funding for Medicare when he instituted his reviled socialized healthcare debacle. Only this time around, unlike Obamacare, the treachery has “Republican” fingerprints all over it. The stench of RINOs “reaching across the aisle” to ensure its passage is inescapable.
Worse yet, the process by which this atrocity was forced through the Senate is reflective of the brutish tactics of former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D.-NV). Although the Senate is now in “Republican” hands, under the leadership of Mitch McConnell, conditions are no better for Senators seeking to offer amendments to improve the bill. As if Reid never left the podium, their efforts have been flatly denied. It is no wonder that Ted Cruz denounced McConnell as “the most effect Democrat leader of modern times.”
Senator Lee offers a note of optimism in the close of his commentary by affirming that the abysmal situation we currently face in Washington can be corrected through “hard work” and “all the policy innovation we can muster.” However, it must be added that the only means of ever implementing those changes is to first broom the closet liberals in both houses who hide behind the “Republican” banner.
